Bamboo is becoming a major new material in the world, both for its low overall impact (sustainability) and for its aesthetic qualities.  German designer Stefan Diez has put a new twist on this trend by inventing bamboo furniture that ships flat-pack, assembles using kevlar string to hold it together, and gradually changes color over time because it uses untreated bamboo canes.

More locally, there is growing concern about seasonal algal blooms in the Arabian Sea (specifically, the Gulf of Oman).  This year the bloom has reached a size equivalent to the country of Mexico!  There is clear evidence that these blooms are directly related to global warming.

A fancy new material created by Ashutosh Tiwari and his team could be coming to jewelry, cell phones, airplanes, and power plants.  According to phys.org, professor Tiwari “has found that a combination of the chemical elements calcium, cobalt and terbium can create an efficient, inexpensive and bio-friendly material that can generate electricity through a thermoelectric process involving heat and cold air.”  The elements are non-toxic to humans (unlike other thermo-electric combinations previously discovered) and can generate detectable amounts of electricity at quite low temperatures.

Quotes for CNC & Injection Molding

Proto Labs has an interactive quote machine that will help you determine actual industry costs for your part(s); very useful for criterion D (cost analysis) and E (commercial manufacture).  To start a quote, you need to know how many parts you’ll need and you’ll need to have a 3D model file (usually solidworks part, or DWG; STL will work for CNC or 3d printing).

Y2, IA HL: Brand packaging tool

As you develop your Brand identity, it may be useful to create a package to demonstrate it.  There’s a nifty tool online that can help with that:  https://packlane.com/

Build your box, add text & pictures wherever you wish, customize the colors to match your product, then right-click the picture of your box in the view you prefer and “Save Image As” to get a customized package image for your Criterion F!

Y2 (2017): Quotes for Criterion E

Proto labs has an ongoing offer to provide free quotes and advice on moving designs to a small-commercial or large-commercial production, for CNC-milling or Injection molding.  This may be really useful for your criterion E if you have parts to make this way.

Inhabitat reports on a new contest specifically for design students: “Fresh Wood 2017 is offering high school and post secondary students a chance to earn some serious green in exchange for their skills in woodworking. Open to students enrolled in North American woodworking, design, or related programs, the industry-sponsored competition has six categories: chairs, case goods, tables, “open”, and Special Theme: Lighting and Design for Production. Cash prizes are awarded within each category and at each school level, as well as a People’s Choice award and a Best of Show award. The submission deadline is May 1, 2017.”

More 3D printing news this week:  Phy.org reported earlier this month on an MIT team that is working on a method to make 3d printing using cellulose viable.  Previously thought impossible because of the disintegration when heated, cellulose is a super-abundant, renewable, and biodegradable resource.  The MIT process occurs at room temperature, which could be a huge change for 3d printing materials.

There’s also been a breakthrough in energy storage systems (batteries).

Are sneakers/trainers sustainable?  See this video & article by Core77 and decide for yourself.  Based on this, I’m not sure they are at the price we currently pay for them.

In other energy related news, Denmark got its entire energy needs from Wind Power one day in February!  Another win for renewables.

If you’re starting on your IAs, here’s a very pertinent quote from Irene Au, former head of design at Google, Yahoo, and Udacity, from an interview she gave Nir&Far:  “One misconception about user research is that it’s about asking customers what they want, but that’s not what user research is. It’s about actually observing people.”  Is that what you’ve been doing in your user research?

General Fab has posted an intriguing article about the first usable 3D printed skin.  Actual skin, with a full 3-layer structure, usable for burn victims and others needing a transplant of this simplest (but largest) human organ.  We’re still a long way from fabricating artificial human parts, but it’s a clear step in that direction.

I’m definitely starting to enjoy the break in the cold weather; I hope you are, too!

In the news this week is a unique clothing piece designed in collaboration with top Muslim female athletes.  It’s a Pro Hijab, active sportswear for practicing female Muslim athletes.  A really neat job and an acknowledgement by a major brand of the growing importance of this part of the world.

Dieter Rams, the iconic designer who influenced (and continues to influence) design throughout the world today has spoken out about the modern trend to consumerism.  He speaks for a return to simple, long-lasting goods that are well designed for their purpose.

Finally, Real Engineering has posted a nifty video about Carbon Fiber, asking the question, “Is this the material of the future?”  Many think it is.

Netflix is producing a new series focused on design, Abstract: The art of Design, which has the folks over at Core77 pretty excited.  Particularly interesting to them is last week’s episode, which focused on automotive designer Ralph Gilles.  They document both his rise to fame within General Motors as well as the very human side of being a designer and how design teams work.  A great view, if you have a Netflix subscription (and I hear they’re giving away a 30-day free trial right now, so you could sign up at no cost, even if you only want it for this show!).

In other car-related news, Core77 also reported on the really nifty shelf Ford has added in their new ecoSport model, using a core of honeycomb paper!  It’s the same technique IKEA used in their Lack tables.  Invention spreading.  What other uses could you think of for such a lightweight and strong internal support structure?

On Coroflot this week, I ran across the portfolio of a young (25 year old) master’s student who has some work that is a great exemplar of development of a final presentation.  Komal Rathi shows off his 4060R design for a table lamp, which includes ideation sketches, a mini-brief, development of details, and full renderings both solo and in-situ.  Well worth a view to see how pros are expected to present their products.

Along similar lines, Miss Morgan Matt submitted a great photo of her model development and samples of the many sculptural models she made as part of an ergonomics project, on Instagram.  Take a look at how the work she did on incrementally improving each model resulted in a really refined looking product.

It isn’t new, but this video entitiled “What is product design?” is a great minute-and-a-half of thinking about design with the question “What should our focus be?”  One answer is presented here.  Do you agree with it?

For those of you just starting out with your Internal Assessment Projects, I have a video from the Students of Product Design series.  This on is on the importance and techniques of research, which is critical as you begin your IA.  If you do a great job with your initial research, it makes the rest of the project so much easier.  I’m going to have Number One talk to you about this over the coming week or so, too.

In regional design news, the whacky rotating skyscraper that was proposed in Dubai a while back finally looks like it will get built.

On the solar energy front, a new development using silicon nano-particles means we are another step closer to having efficient and aesthetic solar-collecting windows.  This key development results from a change in the way silicon reacts with light when it is shrunk to the size of a nano-particle.  Physics, in the form of materials science FTW!

3d replacement arms?!

If you were interested in the IA idea of building replacement arms for the young lad I mentioned in class, here are a couple articles about that:

First, the article about the young boy himself.  He’s not the only one with the problem, but he is one client we might be able to find and work with.

Second, an article about a similar type of project in Brazil, with whom we might be able to work and share – they also work with an NGO/non-profit in the US that is focused on the same sort of work, so this is going on all around the world right now.  It’s exciting work!
